Elevating Black youth’s voices by documenting their stories of changemaking
About the Study
Black Lives Matter brought national attention to the civic power of Black youth, but community organizations and adults who work with youth have known for years that Black youth are community leaders, social change agents, and passionate about making the world a better place. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research on how Black youth make political and social change in their communities, nation, and world.
We interviewed Black youth in Los Angeles who are changemakers, that is, youth who are engaged in social or political change. Hearing from youth in their own voices will shed new light on the strengths of Black youth and their communities.
The main goal of the study is to elevate youth’s voices by documenting their stories of becoming civically engaged. We aim to understand the turning points, issues, experiences, and resources that have led Black youth to become Changemakers.
